Preparing for Your Ceremony
Ceremonies have been used for centuries for healing, divination, and spiritual exploration. This is a guided experience that can bring deep emotional insight, healing, and a profound connection to self and the natural world. Preparation is key to creating a safe, meaningful, and transformative journey.
Setting Your Intention
Intention shapes the entire experience. Ask yourself why you feel called to this journey. Some common intentions include:
- Emotional healing or release
- Deepening spiritual connection
- Gaining clarity or direction
- Exploring consciousness and self-discovery
Journal or meditate on your intention.
My favorite question before ceremony is;
When we meet three years from today, and you were to look back over those three years, what has to have happened, both personally and professionally, for you to feel happy about your progress?
What kind of person do you need to be for that progress to take place?
And that is your intention.
Physical Preparation
Cleansing the body supports a clearer experience.
- Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and processed foods
- Hydrate well, but avoid overeating on the day of the ceremony
- Recommend fasting after lunch.
Mental and Emotional Preparation
- Practice mindfulness or breathwork to foster presence and inner stillness
- Reduce screen time and external stimulation to quiet the mind
- Face your emotions with compassion—whatever is unresolved may surface in the experience
- Surrender control: trust that the medicine will guide you to what you need
The Right Facilitators and Setting
The setting and the person guiding your journey matter deeply.
- Kim and I have facilitated and guided 100s of ceremonies. Our focus is on safety, presence, and progress.
The Ceremony Experience
Arrival
- Greetings: patterns, colors, and light changes
- Select a Mat: This will be your home base for the ceremony
- Smude: Smoke from white sage is used to cleanse, purify, or bless a person
- Hape & Intentions: a facilitator will meet with you one on one at your mat and review your intentions and serve you hape
- Group Instruction: Discussion on rules, logistics and the experience.
Consumption and Onset
A tea will be served with 5-8g of mediciine, honey and cacao. Effects begin within 10–20 minutes, peaking around 1.5–3 hours, with a total duration of 4–6 hours.
Possible Effects
- Visuals and sensory shifts: patterns, colors, and light changes
- Emotional waves: from joy and awe to grief or release
- Ego dissolution: a loss of sense of self or time
- Spiritual insights: connection with nature, ancestors, or universal love
- Physical sensations: tingling, warmth, or body heaviness/lightness
Whatever arises, remember: relax, breathe and stay present
The Role of the Facilitator
Every ceremony has a unique curated playlist specifically for that ceremony. We use music, singing, smoke, hape and energy work to guide and hold space. If challenges arise, we are here to support your navigation.
Ceremony
What to Bring
- Comfortable clothes and layers for temperature changes
- A journal to capture insights after the journey
- Anything that will increase your comfort
- Water bottle (we do provide bottled water)
- A blanket cushion and pillow
Post-Ceremony Integration
The days after the ceremony are critical for making the most benefit of your journey.
Integration Practices:
- Rest and avoid busy environments
- Journal your experience in detail
- Engage in quiet practices like meditation, nature walks, or creative expression
- Breathwork – we literally started the studio for post ceremony integration
- Talk with a trusted friend or integration coach
- Allow time—some insights unfold gradually
- Avoid alcohol, heavy foods, or overstimulation in the immediate aftermath
Integration is where the real work begins: applying the insights into your relationships, work, and inner life.
Final Thoughts
A ceremony can be a deeply healing, humbling, and awe-inspiring journey. Approach it with reverence, courage, and curiosity. Let go of expectations, trust the process, and remember—everything that arises is part of the healing and growth.
